The Business & Industry Panel

The role of the Business and Industry Panel is to share knowledge and expertise on issues relating to the future supply of STEM skills and take action to help the development of EngineeringUK’s programmes.

House of Commons/Big Ben.jpg (230 x 153)Members represent some of the most influential companies in the UK from sectors across the full engineering footprint, including aerospace, automotive, construction, defence, energy & utilities and telecommunications. Business and Industry Panel Meetings take place on a quarterly basis at locations around the UK and are attended by member-designated representatives.

From 2015 the new chairman is Toby King, the CEO of Bowman Power and EngineeringUK Board member. Toby’s background is in the medical devices and renewable energy sectors. Keith Clarke, former Chief Executive of WS Atkins, Deputy Chairman of Pell Frishman and a Non-Executive Director and board member at a number of leading industry institutions chaired the Panel over the last three years.

All Corporate Member organisations also have the opportunity to attend hosted lunches or dinners in the private dining rooms of the House of Commons. These quarterly events are themed on issues relating to the supply and development of the STEM skills agenda and provide a unique interaction between policy-makers and industry.

The most recent event focussed on careers advice and guidance and was hosted by Sir Peter Luff MP and attended by Nick Boles MP, Minister of State for Skills. Previous events have included lunches with Shadow Ministers to discuss Labour’s latest thinking on skills, vocational education and regional growth, and with BIS Minister Greg Clark MP on the progress made one year on from the publication of the Perkins Review of engineering skills.

These events provide both member organisations and EngineeringUK valuable insights into what more the government, business and the engineering community can do to ensure we have the engineering skills for both now and the future ahead.
